IBIS world estimates there are 413,046 people employed in the taxi and limousine services in
the US alone. Further, 4.1 million people are directly involved
in the automobile production and maintenance industry. These people would be
‘directly impacted by changes in U.S. production and sales of motor vehicles.’
The trucking industry employs another 8.9 million people.
And the courier and delivery service accounts for another quarter million employees.
The widespread effects of the extinction of car
ownership, if it happens in the future is unpredictable. This list is, by no
means exhaustive; but there will be a loss or transformation of more than 15
million jobs in the next decade or so. That is close to 4.7% of the current US
population and 7.94% of the current US employed population.
Does Anyone know, what happened with Uber ?
Ever since March, with the pedestrian killing incident, they
seemed to have fallen off the map. I know they’ve completely shut down any self
driving efforts in Arizona, but is testing still going on in Pittsburgh? What’s
the sentiment like within the company? Have they pretty much resigned
themselves to hoping they can try and partner with another self driving company
like Waymo or Cruise?
It seems like Toyota took a chance on Uber. I wonder why they
didn’t choose to join the Softbank led venture with Cruise.
